Overview

A garden with all medicinal plants.

The Medicine game mechanic allows for the crafting and application of Medicines to treat the health conditions that Sapiens are susceptible to.

Health Conditions

Sapiens are subject to 4 different types of treatable health conditions: injuries, burns, food poisoning, and viral infection. Sapiens will experience increased Loyalty when any of the conditions are treated.

Type Severity In-Game Description Treatment
Injury Minor Injury "Just a few cuts and bruises. Should heal on its own but can become infected without treatment." Injury Medicine
Injury Major injury "Can move, but can no longer do work. Will heal faster with the right medicine, or could become critical." Injury Medicine
Injury Critical injury "Life threatening injury. May heal slowly, but without treatment it could lead to death." Injury Medicine
Burn Minor burn "A little painful, but should heal on its own. Can heal faster with the right medicine." Burn Medicine
Burn Major burn "Prevents certain activities. May heal slowly without treatment, or could become critical." Burn Medicine
Burn Critical burn "Life threatening burn." Burn Medicine
Food Poisoning Minor food poisoning "Should recover fine, but treat with the right medicine to make sure it doesn't get worse." Food Poisoning Medicine
Food Poisoning Major food poisoning "Can no longer work. May recover slowly without treatment, or could become critical." Food Poisoning Medicine
Food Poisoning Critical food poisoning "Life threatening condition." Food Poisoning Medicine
Viral Infection Minor viral symptoms "A little sniffle, should clear on its own, but could become worse or spread to other sapiens without treatment." Virus Medicine
Viral Infection Major viral infection "Prevents certain activities. Could become critical and will spread easily to other sapiens." Virus Medicine
Viral Infection Critical viral infection "Extremely infectious. Without treatment, could lead to death." Virus Medicine

Investigating

To investigate a medicine, you must gather all the necessary ingredients for the specific medicine (detailed in the table below). Additionally, you need a Quern-stone for the research process and a Bowl to collect the resulting medicine. Although any medicinal plant ingredient can be used to research a medicine recipe, some ingredients appear in multiple recipes. To prevent confusion and ensure the intended medicine is produced, investigate the following ingredients to guarantee the outcome:

Upon successful investigation of the first medicine, the tribe will gain the Medicine Skill. However, all medicines must be investigated individually to make them available.

Obtaining

The following medicines are available to be crafted. Medicines are created from medicinal plants. Please note that all medicines require a bowl and quern-stone in addition to the ingredients to craft, and must be crafted at a crafting area by a sapien assigned the Medicine role (unless you are investigating the first one).

Administering Treatment

Sapiens can self-administer medicine if the required medicine is available in a Storage Area, unless they are critically hurt. Sapiens assigned the Medicine Role will actively seek and treat those in need of medical attention. While the player typically does not need to manually instruct the medics, the option is available in the radial menu when a sapien is selected. Sapiens who need medical attention are marked with a "+" icon above their heads.

For a large colony it is generally advised to have a few dedicated medics (sapiens having the "Medicine" role) and a good supply of medicines on hand. With prepared medics a nomad coming through the tribe with a viral infection becomes a non-event for a couple of days versus a full blown epidemic with multiple sapiens out of the work force, and a large percentage slowed down by the infection.
